Beaconsfield History: Possibly settled as long ago as the Neolithic Era, what we now know as Beaconsfield would have been known to the Romans during their occupation of Britain. Remains of villas and significant Roman buildings in the area give testament to this. Probably a settlement during Saxon times, the first written record of Beaconsfield dates from the 12th century (1185) when the name was documented as Bekenesfeld (meaning roughly “clearing in the beech trees”).
Beaconsfield received its first charter to hold an annual market in 1269, originally for the purposes of selling livestock and local produce, it continues to this day as the May Fair.
During the 17th and 18th centuries Beaconsfield became a significant coaching post, with numerous coaching inns situated on the High Street, attracting travellers between London and Oxford, the prosperity of the town increased as a result, but as well as attracting welcome visitors to the town, this also drew less savoury characters in the form of highwaymen, who robbed passing coaches as they approached or left the town.
During the 19th century, Beaconsfield was represented in Parliament by the Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, a favourite of Queen Victoria, who later named him 1st Earl of Beaconsfield (1876).
An area known as New Town, developed to the north of the town, with the arrival of the railway in the early 20th century.
Modern day Beaconsfield is an attractive and prosperous place, with excellent road and rail links with London and Birmingham.
Over the years Beaconsfield has had some notable residents including authors G K Chesterton, Terry Pratchett, and Enid Blyton, and poet Robert Frost.
